Written in the slums of a foreign city by a man who was an utter literary failure in his homeland, Tropic of Cancer was first published in 1934 by a pornographer in Paris. Banned in the US, this first and much later US edition triggered censorship battles, and it wasn't until 1964 that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the book was not pornographic. The stateside publication of Tropic of Cancer made Miller famous in the US, and a steady stream of fans began to visit and write to him at his home in Big Sur. In an attempt to flee the constant attention, Miller moved to Pacific Palisades in 1962 where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Originally banned in the United States for its graphic sexual content, Henry Miller’s classic novel, Tropic of Cancer (1934), follows an unnamed narrator on his travels throughout Paris in the 1930s. The narrator is now widely accepted as being Miller himself, the book based on his own encounters in the French capital. The book is considered one of the most important novels of the twentieth century.
